The Reel
The Shimano Tiagra 50 WLRSA Game Reel is geared
specifically to handle not only the fish themselves but also the
harsh saltwater environment. Perfectly suited for chasing down
Stripeys, this rod features a slightly darker, heavier gold
anodising, a newly designed Septon power handle and a drilled drag
quadrant with a drag curve that’s better suited to New Zealand
conditions.

The heavier anodising makes these reels even more resistant to the
ravages of saltwater, while the click stop drag quadrant permits
more precise drag adjustments. The counterbalanced handle falls
easily to hand when striking a fish and makes winding easier during
the course of a long fight. It’s rubberised ‘tackiness’ combats
sweaty hands which, as you may well know, can be a problem during
the course of a long hard-fought fight.

Another major rule of game fishing is that the leverage you create
in a chair or stand-up harness with a big marlin, tuna or shark on
the other end of the line places a HUGE amount of pressure on the
tackle. That’s exactly why Shimano has made the Tiagra’s one piece,
machine-cut frame from a 7mm aluminium tube (the thickest on the
market). Team that up with the A-RB bearings, heavy duty stainless

Shimano Metal Series
The Metal construction showcased in some of Shimano’s finest reels
now appears throughout their line of Metal Series products. Metal
frames not only keep moving parts in precise alignment, they also
feature the use of the latest anodising, plating and painting
techniques for beautiful and durable finishes.

Anti-Rust Bearings
A-RB are made of stainless steel that has been through the A-RB
process. At least 10 times more corrosion resistant than standard
stainless steel ball bearings. Easy maintenance no-shield design
allows for easy flushing of debris and easy lubrication. Increased
bearing speed-no shield design and lighter viscosity lubrication
reduce friction and allow the bearing to spin faster and
longer.

Shimano Aluminium Cold Forged Spool
These spools provide strength and durability over diecast aluminium
or graphite spools.

2 Speed Gearing
This mechanism is designed so that gear changes are quick and easy,
even when fighting a fish. The low gear ratio used for high-power
retrieves is selected by pushing the button on the base of the
handle. Return to the high-speed ratio by sliding the release
button along the handle shank. By using two sets of gears, the
drive and pinion gears are always engaged. There is no gear meshing
during the shift.

The Rod
The Shimano Abyss SW Stand Up Game Rod has been
designed, tested, redesigned, tested, tweaked and tested again by
Team Shimano and Tony Orton from Offshore Adventures and his busy
charter crews.
